FPV F6 E Review & Road Test

Words – Paul Maric

310kW and 565Nm, they’re figures not uncommon to many performance cars with V8 engines. Ford Performance Vehicles went against tradition in 2003 when it released a turbocharged version of its six-cylinder engine, bucking the V8 stronghold that began as far back as the Aussie motoring enthusiast can remember.

With over 40% of FPV sales going toward FPV’s potent turbocharged six, it’s a market segment FPV has attempted to capitalise on with the F6 E. The FPV F6 E is a luxo version of the F6, offering the same intoxicating performance with a little more leather and a lot more wood.

From the exterior, it’s hard to differentiate the F6 E from any other Falcon. A subtle boot lip spoiler, alloy wheels and single colour FPV body kit are the only visual enhancements. As with all turbocharged Falcons, the front-mount intercooler bares itself through a mesh grille at the lower portion of the front lip.

FPV F6 E Review & Road Test

It’s inside the cabin where the F6 E shines. Lashings of woodgrain feature throughout the cabin, along with leather padding on the doors and centre console. The chunky sports steering wheel sits comfortably in the hand, but doesn’t tilt high enough for taller drivers.

A cheesy starter button and unique vehicle number sit in a panel that deletes the tissue holder fitted to the non-FPV Falcon range.

The audio and climate controls are easy to use and easy to find, which is crucial when searching while travelling at speed. The only disappointment is the lack of backlighting on the steering wheel controls, making them hard to see at night.

FPV F6 E Review & Road Test

Music lovers will enjoy the sound system’s ease of use. iPod owners can plug their device directly into the jack located in the centre console. Music is controlled via the central interface, allowing the user to select playlists and navigate folders.

Unfortunately, the quality of the speakers goes against the ease of use and functionality. A lack of clarity and audible distortion ruins the experience. It’s about time Ford invested in a quality audio setup for their cars.

Driver and front passenger leg and head room is fantastic. Rear passenger leg room on the other hand is slightly cramped, while head room is accommodating for both adults and children.

The seats are very comfortable, but don’t offer much side and lateral support. The flat based seats will send you sliding around the cabin if you don’t watch your P’s and Q’s during cornering. Although the driver is treated with an electrically adjustable seat, the passenger is left with full manual adjustment.

FPV F6 E Review & Road Test

Powering the F6 E is Ford’s renowned 4.0-litre, inline six-cylinder engine. Featuring forced induction by way of turbocharger, the menacing six produces 310kW and a back shoving 565Nm of torque from a low 1950rpm. The F6 E is only available with the German ZF Sachs six-speed automatic gearbox. The official combined fuel consumption figure is 12.1L/100km, on test that figure was easily achieved with the vehicle averaging 11.8L/100km.

If you’re yet to drive a modern turbocharged inline six-cylinder such as the Falcon or the offerings from BMW, you’re missing out on an engine note that assaults the senses. It doesn’t assault them in a bad way, more in the way that Jen Hawkins would assault your senses if she was standing in front of you, nude.

When you give it some serious welly, the inline six begins to moan soon before the turbocharger spools and brings on a tsunami wave of torque that doesn’t relent until 5200rpm. The induction noise, in addition to the exhaust note can be heard from a mile away.

FPV F6 E Review & Road Test

If the acceleration wasn’t brutal enough, the menacing noise on up-shift is sure to get your senses tingling.

Braking is taken care of by a set of 355 x 32mm cross drilled and ventilated front rotors with Brembo 6 piston callipers and 330 x 28mm cross drilled and ventilated rear rotors with Brembo 4 piston callipers. The pedal is firm, but offers plenty of bite and feedback. The steering is spot on, erring on the heavy side to give the driver a sense of effort during cornering.

The gearbox features manual shifting and a sport mode that holds gears and shifts with intensity when it notes the driver’s style change.

The ride is soft with a hint of firmness. As a result, cornering is sloppy with a considerable amount of body roll.

FPV F6 E Review & Road Test

While I’ll wax lyrical about how impressive this engine and gearbox combination is, it’s let down by lazy engineering and the battle of power with FPV’s HSV competition.

If you stand on the throttle from a standing start, the rear tyres attempt to erupt in tyre smoke, only to be reined in by the traction control. The 245mm wide rear tyres don’t have anywhere near enough grip to contain the torque this engine produces. It’s amusing at first but becomes frustrating when you are simply trying to drive without the theatrics.

Matters become even worse when the road becomes damp. Traction is harder to obtain and the slightly late intervention of the stability control during instances of traction loss make the F6 E more of a handful than it needs to be.

More attention needs to be paid to traction – or the lack thereof. HSV embarked on wider tyres to tackle the issue, while Ford has only increased tyre width on performance Falcons by 10mm since the AU Falcon bit the dust, despite a 15% increase in power.

FPV F6 E Review & Road Test

If the chaotic traction problems weren’t enough to frazzle you, just wait for the price. $79,740. That’s almost $80,000 for what is essentially a warmed over Falcon G6E Turbo.

Although FPV needed a luxury version of its F6, the F6 E is simply too expensive and doesn’t offer enough differentiation from its siblings.

If I was buying, I’d go straight for the G6E Turbo. Not only does it come with the same features (aside from the brakes and increase in power and torque), it’s over $20,000 cheaper and in my opinion also looks better.

Maybe I’m going mad, but I simply can’t see any reason to spend almost $80,000 on something that’s as good as its $57,490 sibling. Long live the G6E Turbo.

Michael Schumacher is returning to Formula One after reportedly signing a deal with Mercedes GP for the 2010 season.

It is believed the seven-time world champion has signed for one year alongside compatriot Nico Rosberg and will be paid seven million euros (AUD$11.4 million).

The move will reunite Schumacher with team principal Ross Brawn, who was at the helm during his seven world titles at Benetton and Ferrari.

Schumacher to return for Mercedes in 2010

The 2010 season kicks off on March 14 with the Bahrain Grand Prix, around 10 weeks after Schumacher’s 41st birthday.

The F1 legend retired after the Brazilian GP in October 2006, having won 91 races from 250 appearances.

He was set to fill-in at Ferrari for the injured Felipe Massa this year but was kept out of the cockpit by his own neck troubles.

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo – who claims to have rekindled Schumacher’s passion for racing last year – is distraught about letting go of an icon of the sport and the brand.

But he admitted with Massa and Fernando Alonso already locked in for 2010 there was little he could do to prevent him signing with Mercedes.

Mercedes has been linked to young-gun Sebastian Vettel but he is contracted with Red Bull until the end of 2012, possibly opening the door for Schumacher to stay on for three seasons if all goes well next year.

His comeback is reminiscent of Niki Lauda who returned in 1982 after two years on the sidelines and went on to win his third world championship in 1984.

Schumacher still has a way to go however, if he wants to take the title of the oldest world champion off Juan Manuel Fangio.

The Argentine won his fifth title at 46 before retiring in 1958.

Honda has joined Toyota in the Indian small car race, announcing that it will also unveil a micro concept at the New Delhi Auto Expo in January.

Honda joins Toyota in Indian small car race

Known simply as the New Small Concept (NSC), Honda says the car is being developed for emerging markets with its Indian affiliate Honda Siel Cars India and will be smaller than its Jazz and City models.

Toyota stated its intentions of previewing a similar vehicle in Delhi around two weeks ago.

Codenamed the EFC for Entry Family Car, Toyota has since revealed it will be called the Etios, which means “the origin of”.

It is believed Toyota will show both sedan and hatch versions of the Etios at the Auto Expo before the release of the sedan in late 2010 and the higher-volume hatch around three months later.

A 1.4-litre diesel from overseas Yaris models will power the Etios along with Toyota’s 1.3-litre K3 petrol engine which may be downsized to 1.2 litres to meet Indian regulations.

Insiders admit the car will be built to cost with hard interior plastics and a single windscreen wiper, but say maintaining a quality feel and high NVH standards have been a goal from the outset.

Neither the Etios or the NSC will directly take on the $2435 Tata Nano, but with prices expected to start around double that mark, both will be well equipped to expand out of India into other emerging markets.

Following meetings between Sweden’s IF Metall Union and Saab bidder Spyker Cars yesterday, union representatives have told Reuters that Spyker’s business plan was a copy of an old plan made by Koenigsegg, the Swedish luxury carmaker which dropped its bid for Saab last month.

Spyker plan for Saab copies Koenigsegg says Swedish union

Union chairman, Mr Stefan Lofven, told Reuters that Spyker has conducted stress tests on the plan after meeting with Spyker CEO, Mr Victor Muller.

“Spyker is anxious for this to become a reality,” Mr Lofven said. “From what we can see, this seems serious. They have put in a lot of time and money into this.”

Spyker is pressing ahead with efforts to cut a deal for Saab with GM after lodging a new fast-track offer to buy Saab from GM on Sunday.

Speculation of possible backing from a Dutch billionaire fanned the Saab’s hopes of an eleventh-hour reprieve.

Ready to take centre stage at the show will be an electric version of the popular Fiat 500 and a Lancia Delta hatch dressed with a Chrysler grille.

The sources went on to say that although Chrysler has no immediate plans to sell either of the vehicles in North America, CEO Sergio Marchionne has confirmed that he plans to gradually merge the Lancia and Chrysler brands.

A corner of Chrysler’s stand will also be dedicated to showing vehicles from Fiat’s luxury-sports brands, including Ferrari (with the 458 Italia) and Maserati (with the GranCabrio).

The Detroit Motor Show kicks of on January 11, 2010.

Godzilla always had a bit of a green tinge to him, right?

450kW Nissan GT-R hybrid rumoured for 2012

If the rumours rising from Japan are correct, the next generation of Nissan’s shrieking beast could go hybrid when it is launched around 2012.

Earlier this month Japan’s Best Car Magazine said the new model would be powered by a 328kW petrol engine and a 119kW electric motor, combining for a total max output of 447kW (or a nice round 600hp).

Despite the absolute commitment of Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn to electric vehicles as the future of his company, March’s Geneva Motor Show played host to the Infiniti Essence – a 441kW 3.7-litre twin-turbo V6 hybrid.

450kW Nissan GT-R hybrid rumoured for 2012

At the time, spokesman for Nissan’s luxury division, Shiro Nakamura, said that the coupe (built on the same platform as the GT-R) was “only a showpiece … for now”.

But the latest reports suggest that a hybrid GT-R is a favoured project among Nissan engineers and could be within three years of a launch.

450kW Nissan GT-R hybrid rumoured for 2012

Edmunds Inside Line says it expects the GT-R to maintain its 3.8-litre V6 but still aim for the 450kW combined output, raising power by close to 100kW over the current 357kW unit.

It says Nissan is aiming for the car to be just as quick despite the weight gains that come with the hybrid system, but believes the all-wheel drive system will not be a victim of a rigorous weight-loss regimen.

When the GT-R was introduced in 2007, the car’s chief engineer, Kazutoshi Mizuno, said it had a long life ahead of it.

“[I expect the] GT-R to maintain a life cycle of six to seven years as it evolves gradually during those years, similar to how Porsche cars evolve,” he said.

450kW Nissan GT-R hybrid rumoured for 2012

But that statement was made in a world before the GFC and when less emphasis was placed on emissions and fuel efficiency.

If he has had a change of heart, expect to see hear Japan’s great green monster howling from as early as 2012.

Seven-time Bathurst winner Jim Richards will return to his Ford roots when he attends the 19th Annual Kiwanis all Ford Day on February 21, 2010 as a special guest.

Jim Richards back with the Blue Oval for All Ford Day

Appropriately, Richards will bring his 550hp (410kW) racing Shannons 1964 Falcon Sprint to join the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Ford Falcon being held at the event. The Falcon Sprint will be one of 1,200 Fords show cars of all models expected at the 2010 All Ford Day, which will be staged at the Deakin University Sports Grounds at Waurn Ponds, Geelong.

Over 30 Ford car clubs will be displaying, along with individual show cars  – all vying for trophies.

Richards started racing a Ford 105E (slope-back) Anglia in his native New Zealand in the early 1960s before graduating to his famous ‘Sidchrome Mustang’, which he brought to Australia when he came here to live in the mid-1970s. He then raced a lightweight Falcon XC-based Sports Sedan in the early 1980s.

Away from the racetrack, Richards has owned a string of Ford road cars over the years, including a rally Escort RS 2000 and an XY Falcon GT.

After initially racing a Mustang in the Biante Touring Car Masters, he swapped to his current Shannons Falcon Sprint, finishing fourth outright in the 2009 Championship.

As well as Ford vehicle of all types, the 2010 Kiwanis All Ford Day will include a Shannons Memorabilia Auction, autograph signings by Ford V8 Supercar stars, trade stalls, V8 Supercar merchandise sales, a (Ford) Bathurst Driving Simulator, a Ford Discovery Centre Display, kid’s rides and a live band.

Walter Rohrl will be 63 years old when he climbs into his Porsche GT3 RS at the Nurburgring 24 Hour Race on May 15 next year, and people in the know are predicting a podium finish.

Former F1 guru Niki Lauda called Rohrl a “Genuis on Wheels”. In Italy he was elected “Rallye driver of the century” and in France he was named “Rallye driver of the millennium”.

If that wasn’t enough, in November 2000 in Italy, a panel of 100 worldwide Motorsport experts elected him “Best Rallye driver ever” so its fair to say the man can drive.

The 3.8-litre 331kW Porsche GT3 RS is a superb machine with an enviable record at the Nurburgring with no less than seven GT3’s filling the top 10 places in this year’s 24 Hour race. http://www.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/GT31.jpg

It comes with a six-speed manual gearbox and short throw gear-lever designed for racing along with dynamic engine mounts, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Stability Management (PSM) as standard kit.

In addition, ride height, camber, toe angle and anti-roll bar settings can be altered for different circuits.

In standard guise, the GT3 RS will rocket from 0-100km/h in just 4.0 seconds and top speed is 310km/h.

Walter Rohrl knows this place better than most having put thousands of laps down during testing of most new cars from the Stuttgart based car company.

He is obviously very confident of the car’s ability when he says “No other road-going 911 has ever been as close to a race car as this current GT3 RS. That’s why I’m thrilled to be able to prove that this sports car is up to the challenge of the 24 hour race”.

Audi has earned top honors for two of its engines on the respected “10 Best Engines” list from the editor of Ward’s Auto World.

Audi TFSI engines earn two places in Ward’s top ten list

Both the turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI engine, as featured in the A4, and supercharged six-cylinder 3.0 TFSI engine, for the sporty upgrade S4 model, impressed the Ward’s editors.

“This year’s list embodies how the industry is responding to demands for higher fuel economy and lower emissions without shortchanging performance,” said Ward’s AutoWorld Editor-in-Chief, Mr Drew Winter.

“Auto makers are using innovative designs and advanced technology to boost horsepower and torque while downsizing engines and increasing efficiency.”

Audi is the first car company to sell 100 per cent of its petrol engines with FSI direct injection technology, starting with model year 2010. The Audi S4 sedan, new for 2010, ushered in a new era of downsizing while enhancing performance and handling over the previous generation 2008 sedan model. Audi engines have been on the Ward’s “10 Best Engines” list for six consecutive years and a total of eight times in the decade.

“Audi fuel-efficient powertrain technologies excel at delivering exceptional driving performance with reduced environmental impact,” said Mr Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America.

“The well-rounded approach the brand is undertaking will keep Audi in a leading position for the foreseeable future.”

To be eligible for the competition, each engine must be available in a regular-production US-specification model on sale no later than first-quarter 2010, in a vehicle priced no more than $54,000, a price cap indexed to the average cost of a new vehicle.

Throughout October and November, six editors of Ward’s Automotive Group tested 34 vehicles from 13 manufacturers in their normal driving cycles in metropolitan Detroit. They scored each engine based on power, torque, refinement, technical relevance and comparative data. Each engine was evaluated because it was all-new, offered significant technology upgrades or was a returning winner from last year.

The awards will be presented in Detroit during the North American International Auto Show at a ceremony on January 13, 2010.
